Crypt of the Colònia Güell:
The architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) most representative of Catalan Modernism, designed the crypt of the church that was never completed. It's an oval plant of 63x25 m, with 5 naves. The Church was composed of several towers, highlighting the central tower of 40 m. height. Gaudí used the crypt to investigate the ruled surfaces (paraboloids, hyperboloids, helical and conoides). He used twines that were hanging from a base turned upside down with the building plant drawn, with bags full of birdshot depending of the loads which each element was receiving. The shape of the twines showed the catenary curve of arches and vaults. The pillars of brick and basalt are inclined according with the schemes of resultant forces. It was a successful test bed for his posterior works. |
